Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for information.
A senior representative said the incident made him without words and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant aiming at residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
